I loved this Japanese box in my house when I was little. It had a geisha on top of it that looked like a magical creature from a fairytale. When I started painting portraits, one of my first one was a geisha, so it comes to no surprise that I start this series exactly with a geisha. The plants around her face are the ones that decorated the Japanese box. There is a ray of light coming from the left top corner and passing through the left side of her face, giving it a bit more yellow color where we find the face cut in more separate geometrical forms then on the right side. It is like a look through the mask/make-up, expressing different part of us that are hidden behind who we show to the world.
