HUICHOL

Updated: Dec 3, 2019

When you come to Mexico, you will see all this colorful objects and tapestries that will surely mark your trip to Mexico. The detail drawing and all those colors will attack your attention and you will probably take a souvenir. Every time I look at Huichols Art, I feel a positive energy of colors so it just came natural to me to paint it.

2017. oil on canvas, 81x60cm

Art and ritual

If you had a chance to go more around my site, you would notice that exploring religion, different cultures and rituals is one of my passions. Huichol art corresponds with my esthetical preference but as well why I was so interested to spend one month painting it was because from young age I was interested in shamanism. In Huichol art there are symbols of their culture and shamanistic tradition. Actually, every color, animal and shape are there for a reason.

The Huichol or Wixáritari

The Huichol are an indigenous people of Mexico however, they call themselves Wixaritari means "the people" in their language. The woman, in the painting, is dressed in original Huichel dress and around her are famous Huichel drawings. Her head is encircled by a deer shaped line which connects to my name Jelena/jelen (meaning deer in Serbian).

Every drawing has its story.

I have put in my background a copy of drawing of nature. I see this amazing connection of native Americans and land, which I feel myself and, in a way, I feel close to them.

The explanation is focused on this specific peace, but to understand where the whole idea come from, why I did this collection, please read my artist statement on my collection ‘BEAUTY OF US’ which this painting is a part of:
